News that has gone around the world in recent days is the death of the American Sandra Sultzer, who in September 2021 underwent an operation with the “Da Vinci” robotic device as a treatment for the colon cancer she suffered from.
However, this device pierced, burned and tore part of her intestine, causing severe injuries that took the patient’s life. Today on the LEX & CO blog we will tell you everything you need to know about this topic.
In September 2021, Sandra Sultzer underwent surgery at Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital, in Florida, United States, where she underwent surgery with the Da Vinci robot, which caused severe injuries to her small intestine: a burn and a tear
The serious injuries she sustained caused the patient to require corrective surgeries over the following months to address the additional severe pain. However, she passed away in February 2022.
Harvey Sultzer, Sandra’s husband, filed a lawsuit against the company Intuitive Surgical (IS) in the Florida courts at the beginning of February of this year. This American company manufactures, develops and markets products for robotic surgery such as the Da Vinci system or the Endoluminal Ion.
In this lawsuit, the widower specifies that the Da Vinci robot had flaws, which were documented in an investigation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) between 2009 and 2011, where multiple anomalies are indicated. , including an insulation problem that could cause current leakage that would cause injuries like the one suffered by Sandra. However, IS does not warn its users about this.
In his lawsuit, Sultzer seeks $75,000 in damages and damages on charges of negligence, product liability, design defects, failure to warn and punitive damages.
The victims of the Da Vinci robot could be thousands according to company reports, which reveal previous complaints and reports of injuries during robotic surgeries with this system.
The great controversy raised by Sultzer’s lawsuit lies in the implementation of technologies in the medical field. However, the company has not commented on the matter, although it is expected to respond to the lawsuit.
