Autoimmune encephalitis ends with a punctured lung

Rosaura Bautista, Ximena’s mother, announced that in December 2023 her daughter Ximena began to have seizures, so they took her to a private clinic in her native Huejuta where they did an x-ray and tomography that did not reveal anomalies. She was only prescribed anti-seizure medications.

However, given the situation of Ximena, who had lost mobility in her arms and legs, her relatives chose to admit her to the DIF Children’s Hospital, where she had an encephalogram and on January 25 she was diagnosed with autoimmune encephalitis. .

On January 28, Ximena was transferred to General Hospital 36 of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Pachuca due to lack of resources. Although Ximena was still talking and eating, she continued to have seizures and immobility in her legs and arm, and she began to have involuntary movements, which meant that an MRI could not be performed.

On February 8, they were finally able to perform this analysis, but the patient had fallen into a coma between the 1st and 2nd of the same month.

On March 1, the little patient couldn’t breathe, so doctors opted to intubate her, but in the process they punctured her lung. When they noticed her, the doctors placed a tube to drain the blood from the affected lung, and eight days later they extubated her, but left the tube because of the air that entered the lung.

After 15 days, the patient began to have an infection that, after being treated by the doctors, the hospital wanted to discharge the patient, even though she was still unconscious. Given this, Ximena’s mother filed a complaint for medical negligence against HGZ36.
